Communities In Schools would not be able to help students without the support of so many great, caring teachers, and the national CIS organization has surveyed teachers to discover their attitudes about the CIS program. In one study, teacher support levels were examined in eight states, including Georgia as well as Texas, Florida, North Carolina, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Washington and Ohio.
Teachers were asked to identify top problems within their schools, and the top issues were:
Poverty — 88 percent
Students come unprepared to learn — 87 percent
Lack of parental involvement — 87 percent
Student behavior problems — 77 percent
Student apathy — 72 percent
Poor student attendance — 66 percent
Poor student health — 46 percent
Students dropping out — 45 percent
Student pregnancy — 42 percent
Despite these issues, some 77 percent of the respondents indicated they were able to be more effective in their teaching because CIS provided students access to learning resources. Teachers also reported that CIS helped students develop positive attitudes toward learning, develop a greater commitment to learning, and come to class better prepared to learn.
