Thanks again to United Way for our ECHS school supply drive!

Before the 2015-16 school year kicked off, teachers at East Coweta High School were treated to free school supplies and equipment that will make their work a bit easier and more productive. The supplies were collected during the recent School Supply Drive for teachers sponsored by United Way in Coweta County (a division of United Way of Greater Atlanta), which partnered with Communities In Schools of Coweta County for this year’s event. Above are Jennifer Young of United Way and Gina Weathersby, executive director of CIS of Coweta County. Both women expressed appreciation that the two organizations could partner in the project to help East Coweta teachers.

Local businesses and individuals donated binders, chart paper, markers, compasses, erasers, flash drives, graph paper, hand sanitizer, highlighters, loose leaf paper, mounting tape, paper towels, pencils, pens, Post-It Chart Paper and Post-its, rulers, sanitizing wipes, sheet protectors, staplers/staples, tissues, white board cleaner and white board markers.

The local businesses that served as collection points for donations were Cargill Meat Solutions, Hampton Inn, Piedmont Newnan Hospital, Piedmont Newnan Hospital Wellness Center, Senoia Cycle and The Southern Credit Union.

Jessie Foreman of CIS, ECHS teachers Randy Robbins and Christopher Bolling, Denise Buchanan of CIS and Jennifer Young with United Way show some of the school supplies donated to ECHS teachers in the CIS and United Way School Supply Drive.

The day before students arrived for the start of the 2015-16 school year, teachers at East Coweta High School were treated to free school supplies and equipment that will make their work a bit easier and more productive. The supplies were collected during the recent School Supply Drive for teachers sponsored by United Way in Coweta County (a division of United Way of Greater Atlanta), which partnered with Communities In Schools of Coweta County for this year’s event.

“The Coweta County United Way Advisory Board identified education and health as among the key priorities in Coweta County,” said Jennifer L. Young, Regional Director for Clayton, Coweta and Fayette Counties for United Way of Greater Atlanta. “We are glad we could partner with Communities In Schools to help the East Coweta teachers. It’s been a great project.”

Gina Weathersby, Executive Director of Communities In Schools of Coweta County, said CIS was honored to partner on the project.

“We have had a great association with United Way, and they are one of our most valued sponsors and partners,” Weathersby said. “This School Supply Drive for teachers was a wonderful idea and a great way to give back to the teachers at East Coweta who give so much to our program.”

Local businesses and individuals were extremely generous with their donations. Items collected included binders, chart paper, markers, compasses, erasers, flash drives, graph paper, hand sanitizer, highlighters, loose leaf paper, mounting tape, paper towels, pencils, pens, Post-It Chart Paper and Post-its, rulers, sanitizing wipes, sheet protectors, staplers/staples, tissues, white board cleaner and white board markers.

Six local businesses served as collection points for donated supplies, including Cargill Meat Solutions, Hampton Inn, Piedmont Newnan Hospital, Piedmont Newnan Hospital Wellness Center, Senoia Cycle and The Southern Credit Union.

Plans for the September 5, 2015, Sunrise on the Square Road Race are almost complete, and organizers at Main Street Newnan are excited about changes to this year’s event that will make it better than ever for runners and spectators. The event is now sanctioned by the USATF, which makes Sunrise on the Square an official qualifier for the Peachtree Road Race.

“This is a huge deal for runners,” said Main Street Newnan Manager Courtney Harcourt. “We made some changes to make this possible, but we’ve made it a better race and more enjoyable experience.”

Runners are given options to pursue a 1 Mile Fun Run, 5K route and a 10K route. Both the 5K and 10K races begin in Downtown Newnan and feature views of Newnan’s beautiful historic intown neighborhoods and commercial district. The new course also includes more diversity of terrain, including long, flat stretches, and downhill and uphill sections.

“We really believe we have made the race better than ever for runners and spectators,” Harcourt said. “We want to thank our title sponsor, Mike Fitzpatrick Ford, for supporting the event again this year. This year’s race will benefit Communities In Schools of Coweta County, and we can’t think of any group that is working harder to help Coweta County students achieve success.”

Gina Weathersby, Executive Director of Communities In Schools of Coweta County, said she continues to be amazed and thankful for community support for CIS, which works with at-risk students to help them graduate from high school on schedule and achieve future success.

“I can’t say how thankful all of us at Communities In Schools are to receive this kind of support,” Weathersby said. “Coweta County has always been known for its great schools, and this event really shows how Coweta gets behind its students at every opportunity. We are grateful that Mike Fitzpatrick Ford and Main Street Newnan have chosen to partner with us for this great event.”

Runners and walkers of all skill levels are encouraged to participate. Route maps of both the 5K and 10K races can be found at http://www.sunriseonthesquare.com. Registration forms can be found by clicking here.
